A model-based approach to personalised medicine – Gilles Clermont

The discipline of systems medicine seeks to adapt tools inspired from systems engineering and systems biology to solving problems of translational relevance. Model-based interpretation of empirical evidence and model-guided design of experiments, or clinical trials, plays an important role in this regard. A clearer understanding of the drivers of subjectto-subject variability is key to any attempt at a structured approach to personalizing medicine. We will discuss the current clinical conundrum brought about by an evidenced-based medicine approach to acquisition of new knowledge, review existing approaches to personalizing medicine, explore model-based approached to personalization and some of the data and theoretical challenges facing modelers.
